It’s not every day that one gets an opportunity to try a Michelin-starred restaurant, let alone one in the countryside of Luxembourg. So it’s easy to say when I secured a reservation at Ma Langue Sourit, I was very much looking forward to it.
Luxembourg might not be the most popular destination amongst tourists, but the small country nestled between France, Belgium, and Germany is a scenic beauty. The public transport is free and is a very convenient way of moving around within the country. It turned out to be a rainy day, but as I looked out of my bus, the greenery along the road appeared to be more lush and lively.
Ma Langue Sourit is a French name which in English means My Tongue Smiles. The restaurant is owned and headed by Chef Cyril Molard, and has been awarded two Michelin Stars. It is also the highest-rated restaurant by the Gault-Millau guide in Luxembourg, who also named Chef Molard the Chef of the Year in 2020.
Ambience: 9/10
Service: 9.5/10
I was welcomed at the gate and, passing through a short lounge area, was shown to my table by the window. The place is elegant with a chic decor, comfortable seating, and plenty of natural light through the windows. The staff, dressed in formal attire, are attentive to every detail. The food arrives at a steady pace, and although I opted for an eight-course tasting menu, I never felt rushed to finish a course.
Chef Molard himself visited every table, explained the dishes on the menu, and served a couple of courses himself. He also came out to thank all the diners before they left. The service is perfect, as one would expect at an establishment like this.
A special mention for Jodie, Eric and the sommelier, Florent, for the exceptional care they put into their efforts.
Food: 9.5/10
I was treated with an amuse-bouche to start with, before being served their tasting menu with paired wines. The food was immaculate. The dishes were creative with a wonderful mix of flavours. Nothing felt overpowering, yet was impactful on the palate. The Asparagus with Pigeon Yakitori and the Abalone with Leeks were two surprisingly delicate yet delicious dishes.
The following, however, were the standout courses –
1. Catch of the Day – Turbot, cooked on the barbecue, and served with slightly acidic Kimchi Cabbage, salty and fishy Caviar, and a delicate Hazelnut Butter Sabayon.
2. Lobster – Blue Brittany Lobster slow-cooked in Butter and Lemon, and served with rolled Beetroots, citrusy Blackcurrants, and a sweet sauce made of Lobster Shell and Cardamom.
3. Meat Piece – Black Angus Beef served with White Carrots slow-cooked in Orange Juice, Endives topped with Orange Hazelnuts, Onion Tarte Tatin, and a Mustard Seed sauce.
The wines were expertly paired with the courses, while the two desserts — one light and one slightly richer — were a perfect way to wrap up a really good experience.
Pricing: €150 per person
Recommendation: 9.5/10
The place is perfect for a leisurely luxury experience, and the prices are justifiable for a two Michelin Star-rated restaurant. The two tasting menus are priced at six courses for €180 and eight courses for €220, with additional charges for paired drinks. They also serve a four-course lunch menu for €95, which is a good deal given the quality of the food.
